The Kansas basketball team should be one of the best teams in college basketball next season as they are returning a lot of key talent, and they have also had a good offseason in the transfer portal. The Jayhawks are going to have the talent on the roster to take them far, but we thought that would be the case this past season as well, and Kansas lost in the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks just got another edition to the roster as they received a commitment from walk-on Will Thengvall.
“The Kansas men’s basketball program fleshed out the back end of its roster a bit more on Tuesday when it earned a commitment from Will Thengvall, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound guard from Wichita’s Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School who will serve as a walk-on for next year’s Jayhawks, per multiple reports,” KUSports.com said in a report.
Will Thengvall will certainly have a lot of guys ahead of him on the depth chart next season, but this provides some more depth for the Kansas basketball team and it is another roster spot filled.
“He was a good shooter for us and everybody just liked him,” Will Thengvall’s head coach Steve Eck said. “He got along real well with everybody and was just a likable person and our kids followed him and the other two seniors.”
Bill Self is excited for this next Kansas basketball team
Bill Self admitted that he had been thinking a lot about next season before this past Kansas basketball season even ended. The Jayhawks had one of the best rosters in college basketball last year, but injuries hurt them, and they didn’t end up having the season that they were hoping to have.
Kansas started the season ranked #1 in the preseason AP Poll, but they didn’t end up meeting the lofty expectations. The Jayhawks had one of their worst seasons in a long time and one that doesn’t happen often under Self. What’s funny about that, however, is that their worst season in a long time still earned them a four seed in the NCAA Tournament. That says a lot about what Self has built in Lawrence.
A lot of teams would be very happy with going to the NCAA Tournament as a four seed, but last year was a disappointment for Kansas. However, Bill Self is confident that the future is very bright for his Jayhawks.
“We become so accustomed to winning — which is good — that we take it so for granted, and winning, now, becomes something (that’s) expected, so it’s always a relief as opposed to joyous,” Self said. “And losing is something that could be a learning experience, now becomes a disaster. That’s the way it will be here for the rest of time. And that’s what you deserve, to have it like the rest of time. And I will tell you this: Our shortcomings this year will be addressed, and we’ll be as good as we’ve ever been in the very, very, very near future.”
Expectations are once again going to be through the roof for this Kansas basketball team next season, and Self has a lot of confidence that his squad is going to be talented.
